Junk food, characterized by a diet high in calories, sugars and saturated fats, is experiencing a worrying increase in Morocco. This phenomenon, fueled by rapid urbanization and changing lifestyles, has significant repercussions on public health and the country’s economy.

Junk food

The term junk food is commonly used to refer to poor quality food, often high in fats, sugars and additives, and low in essential nutrients.

In French, we also speak of “malbouffe”. Junk-food is an anglicism widely adopted in everyday language.

Other terms may be used depending on the context to refer to foods of low nutritional quality:

  • Fast food : Refers specifically to fast food, often associated with meals prepared quickly and eaten on the go.

  • Industrial food : Refers to food products processed on a large scale, often rich in additives and preservatives.

  • Fast food : A generic term for establishments offering meals prepared and served quickly.

It is important to note that these terms can have different nuances and are not always interchangeable. For example, “fast food” and “quick service” focus on the mode of service, while “industrial food” focuses on the manufacturing process.
